Finally, after more than 25 years, Naples will host again one of its symbolic events, the famous Festival of Piedigrotta, from
September 1 – 12, 2007. It’s being held in honour of the Madonna of Piedigrotta and was in the past the most important event of the year for the Neapolitans. It is considered the festival of the "canzone napoletana":
several of the world-famous Neapolitan folk songs like, for example, "Funiculì Funicolà" and "O’ Sole mio" were originally composed for this festival and introduced there for the
first time.
The festival’s highlights are the big concert at the Piazza Plebiscito
on September 7, where national and international singers will perform traditional songs in the Neapolitan dialect, and the concert on September 8 at the Rotonda Diaz with new Neapolitan songs. Before the concert
on September 8, there is a traditional procession in honour of the "canzone napoletana" with decorated wagons through the streets of Santuario Piedigrotta – Via Caracciolo – Via Cesario Console as far as the Piazza del Plebiscito.
