Visiting the “subterranean Naples”

Today a trip to Naples’ underworld is an important part of the city tours. You can visit many "underground" sites in and around the city like large catacombs (catacombs of San Gennaro, San Gaudioso and San Severo), the excavations of San Lorenzo Maggiore (Via dei Tribunali), the Piscina Mirabilis (located in Miseno, it was the main cistern serving Naples during Roman times) and of course the “subterranean Naples”.

There are two different gates that lead to the subterranean Naples.


One entrance is hidden at the Piazza San Gaetano in a small alleyway of the historic city. Tours take about 2 hours; on request, group tours. The other entrance to the underworld is next to the well-known Bar Gambrinus at the Piazza Plebiscito.
