Flourishing gardens and fragrant lemon and orange groves bewitch visitors with their lush beauty. Procida is the smallest and oldest island in the Bay of Naples and is, like Ischia, of volcanic origin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_146\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146\" src=\"http:\/\/www.portanapoli.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/procida_corricella_panorama_notturno.jpg\" alt=\"Procida by night (\u00a9 Francesca - Portanapoli.com)\" width=\"480\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.portanapoli.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/procida_corricella_panorama_notturno.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.portanapoli.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/procida_corricella_panorama_notturno-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Procida by night (\u00a9 Francesca &#8211; Portanapoli.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Arriving at the harbour Marina Grande of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portanapoli.com\/en\/visit-procida\/\">Procida island<\/a> you&#8217;ll have the wonderful view of fishers&#8217; houses in pastell colours, being reflected by the deep blue water.\u00a0From here you can walk or take a threewheeled microtaxi up the steep road to the S. Maria delle Grazie church.\u00a0Here you can enjoy the view on the picturesque fishing port Corricella.<br \/>\nCorricella was a vulcano crater, around which a characteristic, colourful town developed.<\/p>\n<h4>The Abbey church San Michele Arcangelo is\u00a0the highest point on\u00a0the island\u00a0and\u00a0lies closeby<\/h4>\n<p>It is worth a visit because of its library \u201cBiblioteca dell\u2019abbazia\u201d.\u00a0Further down in the noble palace, surrounded by palms and Bougainvillea, is the oldest nautical college of Italy (Istituto nautico Francesco Caracciolo).<\/p>\n<p>Along the southwest coast of\u00a0the island\u00a0lie beautiful beaches, the yacht harbour Chiaiolella and the small island Vivara that is connected with Procida by a walkbridge.\u00a0Since 1974 it is a nature reserve, accommodating rare birds and plants.<\/p>\n<h4>Procida\u00a0is well known for its Good Friday procession<\/h4>\n<p>Its origin can be dated back to 1627.\u00a0In accordance with the spanish tradition of misteri, religious representations of Christ&#8217;s suffering are carried through the streets. Good Friday night a wooden statue of the dead Christ is carried to the highest point of the island on the backs his faithful followers.\u00a0The following morning a mourning procession, accompanied by trumpets, starts, during which crosses and relics are carried through the streets.<\/p>\n<p>Until today Procida has been spared from mass tourism, which can&#8217;t be ascribed to the former jail, towering above the island.\u00a0This ex-jail was also the fortress of Giovanni da Procida.\u00a0It is, however the inhabitants who want to restrict tourism, which is why only a few small hotels and private accommodation are to be found.\u00a0The most restaurants are in the main town at the harbour.
